A student asked me what it meant when I said that meditation increases our awareness.

My response was that it makes you more aware of everything around you and everything that you do. This is one of the most wonderful - and often unrecognized - benefits of meditation.

If you meditate for 30 minutes a day, it’s in the other 23 1/2 hours where the awareness and changes that meditation can bring shows up.

Leaving Safe For The Unknown

There’s a place where you sit that feels very good. It’s comfortable, safe and you feel secure when you’re there. You can do what you like when you’re sitting in that chair and no matter what someone says, it’s easy to stay comfortably enthroned on it. It’s your ‘comfy chair’ and it secures your place in the world.

I’ve got my favourite chairs and sitting spots in our home. There’s the chair in the room where I teach that I sit in every morning to meditate. There’s another in the living room - my hubby in his chair on one side of a table and me on the other. Just like the lovely couple in the movie Up. It’s nice and it feels good.

But metaphorically speaking, sitting in that ‘comfy chair’ in your life - that’s not so good.

So... here is a question for you.....why is it that people need to put things into a category?

Does it matter? I suppose it might depending on what it’s referring to.

If you’ve decided that it’s time to get a dog, it’s very helpful to know what ‘category’ it would fit into. Is it a large, medium or small breed?

Finding Time To Meditate

We have a new puppy in the house. This is not unusual for us as it's a yearly (or less) occurrence; we foster future Dog Guide puppies for the first year of their life. (more about that below) For the first few months it's like having a baby here.

Xila doesn't sleep through the night yet, is up early and at this point we're living in the land of movable baby gates, rolled up carpets and the need for her to be within someones sight pretty much all of the time that she's out of the crate. So....it's been cutting in to my meditation time!

How do you maintain your practice when there's interference from external factors? It could be anything from puppies to children to work to household duties to vacation time that is putting a crimp in your meditation.

Living The Four Agreements

While studying for my Masters of Wisdom & Meditation Teacher certification, I was exposed to a bevy of wonderful philosophies and teachings that I loved.

One book that has had a profound affect on my day to day living is The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel Ruiz. If you can let them become a daily practice your life will become a little less stressful and much more peaceful.

The Agreements are:

#1 Be impeccable with your word.  #2 Don't take anything personally.  #3 Don't make assumptions.  #4 Always do your best.                       

Simple, right? They lay it right on the line and cut directly to the heart of their meaning. They can be incredibly difficult to live - or incredibly easy. Part of the trick is remembering them and putting them into action. 

When you can do that, it is so much easier to release and let go of what may be bringing you down. No, you don't want to run away from your feelings, but as I've heard said - you don't have to stay living there. For me, I've found that #2 and #3 are the Agreements that have made the biggest difference in my life, but lets start at the beginning.

The Unexpected Gifts of Meditation

There are many reasons to have a meditation practice. The benefits are many and although it can be difficult for people to understand, you simply feel 'different' than before you meditated - in a good way! 

Until they experience this phenomena for themselves, I find that people often think that it's just another underwhelming promise for the next best thing. A bit of an "Oh, that's nice for you, but not for me" mindset.

I always love it when around week 3 or 4 of a new class of students, they begin to tell me how meditation is impacting their life.
